The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a leading human rights centre in the Wits Law School which undertakes research, advocacy and strategic litigation. CALS is seeking a dynamic and passionate advocate to join our team on a part-time, ideally 50%, basis. Brief Description

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

· An LLB or equivalent qualification; an advanced degree in law will be an advantage

· Admission as an advocate

· 2-3 years’ experience post pupillage, preferably with some exposure to public interest litigation

· Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (fluency in other South African languages will be an advantage)

· Experience in, or familiarity with, one or more of CALS’ areas of programmatic work, namely: Gender; Business and Human Rights; Rule of Law; Basic Services; Environmental Justice

· Ability to think about the law as an instrument of social justice to advance human rights and reduce poverty

· Ability to work with a diversity of clients

· Ability to use the law creatively

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Conduct innovative strategic litigation on behalf of CALS’ clients

· Provide training and support to attorneys and candidate attorneys on litigious matters

· Provide expert input into draft policies and legislation

· Participate in the evaluation of our work, strategies and impact

REMUNERATION:

Remuneration is commensurate with experience. CALS is a grant-funded institution and the level of remuneration is dependent on available funding.
