Whole School Development (WSD) is a model used to improve and support the academic, management, infrastructure, social and security environment in a school. It follows an holistic approach to address a range of issues faced by the school over a long period of time.

The WSD is a project that forms part of Exxaro’s 2013-2017 Social and Labour Plan (SLP). We view WSD as a long-term initiative to turn underperforming primary or high schools, located in operating or strategic areas, into schools that produce high-quality matriculants. The largest benefit will be improved employment opportunities for Grade 12 learners, while teachers will benefit from increased development and promotion opportunities.

Grootegeluk mine adopted Mabelane Seleka Technical School for WSD, and the following is being implemented:

  • Fitting a physical science laboratory
  • Appointing 10 teachers
  • Fitting an electrical workshop
  • Conducting learner development
  • Conducting accelerated mentoring and training for high-performing learners
  • Conducting teacher development
  • Conducting principal development
  • Providing School Governing Body (SGB) development (management, team building, leadership)
  • Providing curriculum resources (IT teaching aids)
