Eight people, including seven students, were killed when a taxi struck the trailer of an overturned truck on the N1 highway, near the Nyl Plaza toll gate, on Sunday evening.

The students were returning to Johannesburg from a Zion Christian Church (ZCC) pilgrimage they attended in Moletjie outside Polokwane.

“Our sympathy, prayers and thoughts go to the families, friends and Wits University management during this dark hour. We hope and believe that fond memories of their loved ones will bring comfort during this difficult time of loss.

“Road accidents continue to rob this country of its future and bright minds. This is unfortunate and should not be happening in our country. May their souls rest in peace,” said Phosa.

She also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Phosa called on the university and society as a whole to support the families of the deceased, and ensure that assistance is given to the injured students so that their academic performance is not affected.
